NEW ORLEANS (AP) \u2014 Actor Shia LaBeouf was sentenced to probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to\u00a0punching three people\u00a0outside a New Orleans bar during Mardi Gras.<\/p>\n

LaBeouf must attend an alcohol treatment program under the sentence handed down by an Orleans Parish judge, according to Sarah Chervinsky, an attorney for the actor.<\/p>\n

LeBeouf, most widely known for his starring roles in 2007\u2019s \u201cTransformers\u201d and in 2008\u2019s \u201cIndiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,\u201d had been released on bail following his arrest near the city\u2019s historic French Quarter. Video of\u00a0the Feb. 17 encounter\u00a0shows a shirtless LaBeouf outside a bar shoving one person to the ground and hitting another person in the face, \u201ccausing his nose to possibly dislocate,\u201d according to a New Orleans police report. Police said LaBeouf repeatedly\u00a0used homophobic slurs, including while he was arrested.<\/p>\n

LeBeouf pleaded guilty to three counts of simple battery. Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard handed the actor a six month suspended sentence and two years of probation. LaBeouf also must stay away from the victims and the bar.<\/p>\n

Chervinsky said LaBeouf wanted \u201cto take accountability for his part in what happened\u201d and called it a \u201cminor Mardi Gras bar tussle.\u201d Chervinsky said there was \u201cno evidence it was about bias or prejudice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said in a statement that his office consulted with the victims to ensure their support before offering LaBeouf the plea deal.<\/p>\n

Jeffrey Damnit, a local entertainer whom police identified as Jeffrey Klein, said he was one of the people attacked by LaBeouf. He has said LaBeouf had pushed him from behind at the bar earlier in the night, shouting homophobic slurs and threatening his life.<\/p>\n

Damnit\u2019s attorney said his client hopes LaBeouf\u2019s behavior improves after the actor undergoes substance abuse treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn New Orleans we are all equal, we should all feel safe, and we don\u2019t treat people different based upon relative fame,\u201d attorney Michael Kennedy said.<\/p>\n

After LaBeouf was charged in February,\u00a0a judge ordered\u00a0him to return to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.<\/p>\n

Days later, LaBeouf denied having a \u201cdrinking problem\u201d in an interview with journalist and YouTuber Andrew Callaghan. LaBeouf said he doubted rehab would help him. He told Callaghan that the issues leading led to his aggressive behavior during Mardi Gras were more rooted in \u201canger and ego\u201d than alcohol.<\/p>\n

LaBeouf also said that \u201cbig gay people are scary to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I\u2019m standing by myself and three gay dudes are next to me touching my leg, I get scared,\u201d he told Callaghan. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. If that\u2019s homophobic, then I\u2019m that.\u201d<\/p>\n

LaBeouf,\u00a0who converted to Catholicism\u00a0a few years ago, has had several run-ins with the law during his career, including a 2017 New York City arrest on suspicion of assault that happened during a livestream.<\/p>\n

While on location in Georgia filming \u201cThe Peanut Butter Falcon\u201d later that year, he was\u00a0arrested\u00a0for public drunkenness and accused of disorderly conduct and obstruction and\u00a0sentenced to probation.<\/p>\n

In 2020, he was charged with\u00a0misdemeanor battery and petty theft\u00a0in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

That year, the English singer and actor\u00a0FKA Twigs, whose legal name is Tahliah Barnett, also filed\u00a0a lawsuit\u00a0alleging LaBeouf was physically and emotionally abusive to her during their relationship, which they\u00a0settled in July.<\/p>\n

The actor first gained acclaim as a child for his role on the Disney Channel series \u201cEven Stevens.\u201d<\/p>\n
