TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – An Arizona nonprofit that helps both U.S. military veterans and homeless dogs opened its first facility in Tucson on Monday, June 1.<\/p>\n

Soldier\u2019s Best Friend,<\/b><\/u><\/i> founded in Peoria in 2011, helps U.S. military veterans with PTSD or traumatic brain injuries by pairing them with service or therapeutic companion dogs.<\/p>\n

Most of the dogs in the program are rescued from local shelters, so it is win-win for everyone involved.<\/p>\n

The organization does not charge for the service and offers training in Phoenix, Tucson, Prescott, Flagstaff, Yuma, Show Low, Kingman, and Sierra Vista.<\/p>\n

During the training program, Soldier\u2019s Best Friend also pays for the animals\u2019 spaying, neutering, vaccinations and preventative medications.<\/p>\n

After the training is complete, ownership of the dog is transferred to the veteran, who will then be responsible for costs and care. But Soldier\u2019s Best Friend said reduced veterinary fees are offered through several hospitals in the state.<\/p>\n

To date, Soldier\u2019s Best Friend has rescued more than 380 dogs from shelters and has paired more than 480 veterans with a service pet. The facility in Tucson is located at 3102 East Fort Lowell Road.<\/p>\n
