PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 New campaign ads are attacking former Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, focusing on allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse of power and explicit messages as he runs for Congress.<\/p>\n

The ads began airing days after reports surfaced accusing Lamb of inappropriate sexual behavior, threatening women who spoke out and sending racist and homophobic messages. President Donald Trump endorsed Lamb before the allegations came to light.<\/p>\n

With early ballots going out, Republican opponent Daniel Keenan is trying to turn the allegations into a defining issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark Lamb is a disgrace, an embarrassment, and unfit for office,\u201d the ad said. \u201cI\u2019m Daniel Keenan and I approve this message.\u201d<\/p>\n

Allegations and Lamb\u2019s response<\/h2>\n

The ad references accusations against Lamb, including claims of sending explicit photos and messages, pressuring government employees into sexual relationships and threatening retaliation against women who spoke out.<\/p>\n

The ad states that local news has reported on Lamb\u2019s behavior.<\/p>\n

Lamb has not publicly addressed the allegations in detail and has declined a request for an interview, in which he would have been asked whether the messages were authentic, whether he threatened women who came forward and why voters should trust him if elected to Congress.<\/p>\n

Political analysts weigh in<\/h2>\n

Political analysts on both sides say Keenan\u2019s ads were inevitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just got to hammer that for the next month and a half, right, and just see what happens,\u201d Democratic strategist Matt Grodsky said.<\/p>\n

Grodsky said despite the controversy, Lamb\u2019s endorsement from Trump could still insulate him in the deeply red Republican district.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d be surprised if it actually changes the outcome,\u201d Grodsky said.<\/p>\n

Republican strategist Wes Gullett said Lamb\u2019s silence may be making things worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to play through it. You have to apologize. All they\u2019ve said is this was 10 years ago. Well, that\u2019s not good enough,\u201d Gullett said.<\/p>\n

Gullett said the allegations undercut Lamb\u2019s image as a conservative family-values candidate.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want to be a hypocrite. And in politics, you want to make sure that you don\u2019t over-advertise something that you\u2019re not,\u201d Gullett said.<\/p>\n

Both analysts said the race remains heavily shaped by today\u2019s polarized political climate.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd where\u2019s Mark Lamb? Hiding,\u201d the ad states.<\/p>\n

Lamb has been the front-runner in the race, but with early ballots coming out in less than a month and more allegations surfacing, opponents are betting the controversy can reshape the final weeks of the campaign.<\/p>\n

Trump advisers said Trump views his endorsement as the \u201cgold standard\u201d and is weighing whether to pull support for Lamb.<\/p>\n

Republican gubernatorial candidate Andy Biggs said he is not passing judgment yet, while fellow Republican gubernatorial candidate David Schweikert told KTAR it \u201cborders on immoral\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gullett said Lamb has backed off from public events.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s already backed off and he\u2019s not talking and he\u2019s not doing public events. And that\u2019s really hard, especially when you\u2019re six weeks from an election,\u201d Gullet said.<\/p>\n
