PHOENIX (AZFamily)<\/b> \u2014 President Trump\u2019s pick to be the next U.S. ambassador to Jamaica is raising questions\u2014not about foreign policy, but about a surprising line in her biography.<\/p>\n

These aren\u2019t questions about foreign policy or diplomatic skills, but a claim that she won two Billboard Music Awards\u2014a claim we found no evidence to support.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, President Trump nominated former Arizona political candidate and television anchor Kari Lake as the next United States Ambassador to Jamaica.<\/p>\n

Her appointment is currently awaiting confirmation by the U.S. Senate. <\/p>\n

The pick was made following her controversial and legally challenged tenure overseeing the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM).<\/p>\n

The U.S. State Department has posted that Kari Lake \u201cis proud to have won two Billboard Music Awards.\u201d That\u2019s not a credential typically highlighted in a political bio, so we checked.<\/p>\n

Billboard maintains a database of past winners. A search for \u201cKari Lake\u201d does not show her as a Billboard Music Awards winner.<\/p>\n

We asked the State Department if there was something we missed\u2014and how the claim relates to qualifications for ambassador to Jamaica. A spokesperson referred us to a song titled \u201c81 Million Votes My A**,\u201d a single Lake released in 2023 with a group called \u201cThe Truth Bombers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The group has also worked with a choir made up of men arrested in connection with the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. The song\u2019s title references the number of votes President Joe Biden received in the 2020 election\u2014an election in which claims of widespread voter fraud have not been backed by evidence.<\/p>\n

We found no evidence that The Truth Bombers won a Billboard Music Award.<\/p>\n

The controversy could complicate Lake\u2019s path to confirmation. Republican Sen. John Curtis of Utah, who sits on the committee that reviews ambassador nominations, has raised concerns. Another Republican senator, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, says he won\u2019t vote for Lake if the nomination reaches the Senate floor.<\/p>\n

Both senators cited Lake\u2019s history of denying election results.<\/p>\n

Lake\u2019s spokesperson referred us back to the State Department<\/p>\n

At this point, there is no Senate hearing scheduled to consider Lake\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n
