PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Families of Arizona cold case victims are pushing state lawmakers to increase funding and focus on unsolved cases across the state.

Kristy Stanford lost her husband, Detrick Stanford, on Dec. 13, 2020, in Tempe. He had been shot multiple times, according to Silent Witness.
“I heard gunshots outside my bedroom window. As I looked out the door to see if he had made it home from the store, I saw his truck parked in our parking spot. As I walked towards that direction, I found my husband’s body face down in the sidewalk in a pool of blood,” Kristy said at a news conference Monday at the Arizona State Capitol.
Kristy said she and Detrick had been together since high school.
“Ever since high school, Detrick was my person. For 31 years, we shared a love like no other,” she said.
Detrick’s killer has not been identified.
“I grabbed him, screaming, shaking, begging for him to wake up. He never did,” she recalled.
Kristy said the need for answers does not go away over time.
“These cases don’t expire,” she said. “And neither does the dozens. Neither does the needs for answers. Families of missing persons share a similar pain.”
Karen Dana’s cousin, Loretta McCray Lynn, was stabbed to death in her Mesa home in 1988.

“I remember her as a little girl beside me,” Dana said of her cousin during Monday’s news conference. “The girl riding her horse, Buck. The friend that would come and visit me and go to high school with me. My college companion.”
Advocacy event planned
Arizonans for Effective Public Safety, along with survivors, families, advocates and community partners, will recognize Unresolved Case Awareness Week from Sept. 20-26. The week will include events focused on Arizona’s unresolved homicides, missing-person cases, survivor support and the resources needed to pursue answers.
Families and advocates say they will use the week to call attention to unresolved cases as an ongoing public-safety issue affecting families and communities across Arizona.
