PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Chicago man who was trafficking fentanyl from Arizona has been sentenced to 12 years in prison, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

In 2022 and 2023, Alonzo Powe, 55, arranged to get several packages of fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine sent across the country from Arizona, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
He bought the drugs by mailing the sellers in Arizona large sums of cash.
He then sent the drug parcels through the mail to his home in Chicago’s South Side and other city addresses he had, with the intention of selling the drugs in the area.
Law enforcement searched his home in 2023 and found a USPS box containing fentanyl, along with other packages and plastic bags with the drug. He also had a detailed ledger with customers’ names and prices listed, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Earlier this year, Powe pleaded guilty to a federal drug charge. He was sentenced to prison on Sept. 6.
“Defendant’s narcotics activity was extensive and took place over a long period of time,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan E. Donohue argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum.

“He did not only receive large shipments of narcotics, but processed, repackaged, and sold them to various customers over an extended period.”
Arizona has seen numerous federal drug trafficking busts due to its close proximity to the Mexico border.
