CHINLE, AZ (AZFamily) — What started as a strange sighting earlier this week turned into an attempted rescue effort before a stranded cow fell from cliff ledge in northeastern Arizona early Friday afternoon.

The bovine spent four days perched on a rocky outcropping across from Cottonwood Day School on Navajo Route 4 in Chinle, according to Aurelia Williams, who first spotted the animal.
“Although I am not the owner, I tried my best to get the cow down,” Williams said. “How it ended up there, I don’t know.”
Williams took up the cow’s cause, calling the Navajo Nation, park rangers, a grazing official and Apache County in hopes of getting someone out to rescue the animal.
Rescue attempts were underway late Friday morning. But as rescuers approached and tried to rope the cow shortly after 12 p.m., the animal fell from the ledge.

It’s unclear how far the cow fell, but several witnesses tell Arizona’s Family that it immediately got up and ran away.
