Armed man shot, killed by officer in Gilbert neighborhood, police say

GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A man who police say was armed with a knife has died after being shot by an officer in a Gilbert neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

Gilbert Ofc. Calissa Wilkerson says around 4:30 a.m., officers received a call from a woman who said her adult son was walking outside her home near Guadalupe and Lindsay roads. The woman reported that her son was armed with a knife and was afraid for her family and responding officers’ safety, stating she believed he would be “uncooperative.”

As the first officer arrived at the scene, police say the man began running toward him with a weapon in his hand. The officer asked the man multiple times to stop, but he reportedly refused.

Wilkerson says the man continued moving toward the officer, leading to the officer shooting the man. The man was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but later died.

No officers were hurt during the shooting. A knife was found at the scene, according to Wilkerson.

Authorities stress there are no outstanding suspects and no threat to the public at this time.

Arizona’s Family witnessed several Gilbert police SUVs parked along the street and putting up crime tape to block the area.

Shocked neighbors woke up to the crime scene, saying the typically quiet neighborhood made the incident even more surprising.

Mesa police will be investigating the shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team.

This is the 35th officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the 62nd in Arizona so far this year.
