BAGDAD, AZ (AZFamily) — Firefighters are making major gains against a lightning-caused wildfire in Yavapai County after another successful day of aerial and hand ignition operations, fire officials said Thursday.

The Campwood Fire, which has grown to 1,018 acres, is burning about five miles northeast of Bagdad. While the fire remains 0% contained, fire officials said significant progress has been made.
Crews are wrapping up hand ignitions for the night. Once complete, firefighters should have the blaze tied in along Campwood Road to the west and at the head of the fire.
Meanwhile, very sparse fuels and natural barriers along the east and south sides are helping to slow the fire’s progression.
Over the past two days, helicopter crews have used strategic aerial ignitions to move the blaze off Blue Mountain’s steep terrain and into areas where ground crews can more safely engage it.

A final round of aerial ignitions is planned Friday to burn remaining pockets of unburned fuel inside the fire perimeter.
Approximately 85 personnel remain assigned to the incident, including hand crews, engines, a medical team and overhead staff.
