YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — The Humane Society of Yuma is facing a severe space crisis after taking in nearly 30 rescued animals seized during a police investigation last week.

Officials say the sudden influx of 22 cats and six dogs has pushed the shelter, which was already operating at maximum capacity, to its absolute limit.
According to the Yuma Police Department, officers discovered the animals while responding to an unrelated call at a local residence. Upon finding the animals living in poor conditions, officers coordinated with animal control to rescue them.
“We received a call from animal control early in the morning, and they said that we would be needing to take in 27 animals. It actually ended up being 28,” said Hilary Mulherin with the Humane Society of Yuma.
The emergency intake comes during the challenging summer season, when shelter resources are already strained.
“Not only are we strained on kennel space, it’s hot; no one wants to be out and about … coming in volunteering. Adoptions are slow,” Mulherin said.

Shelter officials explained that the rescue was executed through an “agency assist” partnership. The Humane Society regularly collaborates with the Yuma Police Department and local animal control to handle emergency seizures, welfare checks and large-scale cruelty or neglect investigations.
With shelters across Arizona experiencing similar capacity struggles, local officials are urging the community to step in. The Humane Society of Yuma is urgently seeking monetary donations, as well as temporary foster families to house the animals and free up vital kennel space.
