PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A statewide poll released on Thursday by NextGen Polling found that a majority of Arizonans don’t want Automatic License Plate Reader cameras in their community, and even more people are concerned about misuse.

The poll was done over a three-day period earlier this week, from over 1,600 registered voters in Arizona.
80% of people said they were either somewhat familiar or very familiar with Flock Safety Cameras, and 51% say they believe that the cameras help police solve certain crimes, like stolen vehicles and hit-and-run accidents.
“They believe, you know, Flock cameras do help law enforcement with their job, with their being able to, you know, enforce the laws, enforce the rules, and be able to close crimes, and especially go after, you know, violent criminals. But people still don’t have trust in it, ultimately,” said NextGen Polling Deputy Political Director Troy Holderby.
63% said that they oppose the use of ALPR by law enforcement agencies in their community.
When it comes to the potential misuse of the data, 82% of people in Arizona say they are concerned about that compared to 16% not concerned.

82% of people say they would support requiring law enforcement agencies to undergo independent audits and publicly report on how license plate camera data is used.
“This is ultimately a way for law enforcement to be able to pull and see the amount of trust that the people have in them to be able to do their job,” said Holderby.
In the last two weeks, a Chandler Police Officer and Apache Junction officer resigned from their respective departments after misusing the ALPR system. At least two other officers from other departments are under investigation for similar allegations.
