(Gray News) – A subscription dog food service in the U.K. is recalling all of its meals because it may cause sudden bilateral dry eye in pets, which can lead to vision loss.

The company Years is recalling its fresh meals, excluding its Chef’s Collection line, as a precaution as it investigates its supply of buckwheat used in its meals.
“Years exists for one reason: to give people more time with their dogs, and the reports we have received are deeply upsetting to everyone here. As a result of the reports, we took the step to voluntarily recall our fresh meals because, while the evidence is still developing, we are not prepared to take chances with the dogs people trust us to feed,” a spokesperson for the company said in a statement.
Years said that it’s looking into a possible contamination of the buckwheat supply, but no definitive link has been confirmed yet.
“Independent laboratory testing is underway, alongside our wider investigation, to understand exactly what has happened. We want to give customers clear, evidence-based answers rather than speculate while that work continues, and we will communicate the findings as soon as the investigation is complete,” the company said.
According to the company, there have been about 192 reported, but unverified, cases of sudden bilateral dry eye among its customers’ pets as of Aug. 18. Years said it was first notified of the possible eye problems in late July.

Sudden bilateral dry eye occurs when a dog’s eyes stop producing tears, leading to discomfort and irritation. Symptoms can include excessive blinking, squinting, thick discharge and pawing at the eyes. If left untreated, dry eye can lead to blindness.
Years advised pet owners to immediately stop feeding their dogs Years meals and to watch for symptoms of bilateral dry eye.
If customers suspect their dog may have dry eye, they should contact their vet as soon as possible and report it to Years. Any unused dog meals can be thrown away.
Customers’ subscriptions have been automatically paused for six weeks as Years continues its investigation.
