The club was famous for its ads promising “10 CDs for a penny” and its nostalgic “One Person at a Time” jingle.

The club started in 1955 as a branch of Columbia House Records and sold vinyl albums.

It became a household name in the 1980s after expanding to cassette and 8-track tapes but reached its peak in the 1990s selling CDs.

At one point, the company brought in more than $1 billion a year as Gen Xers built their CD libraries.

Columbia House closed its CD business in 2008 and pivoted to DVDs.

According to a notice posted on the company’s website earlier this week, the company will no longer accept new orders after Sept. 15, 2026.
