(Gray News) – A Colorado man was charged in connection with his wife’s death after claiming she died by suicide after suffering from postpartum depression.

On Aug. 13, Lindsey Barnett, 37, was found dead in the home, Lakewood Police Department said.
Her husband, Patrick Barnett, called 911 around 6 a.m. claiming Lindsey had “cut herself and her throat.”
He allegedly told police he was asleep in the basement and came up in the morning to apologize to Lindsey because the two argued the night before. He found her bleeding in the shower, moved her head and called 911, People reported.
Patrick told investigators Lindsey suffered from postpartum depression. However, the evidence at the scene didn’t align with the story that Lindsey killed herself in the shower.
Officers allegedly found a large amount of blood on one side of the bed, a plant with dirt knocked over next to the bed and some of the soil that got dragged to the bathroom.
Police also saw a “dainty” bloody footstep, seemingly that of a female, between the bed and the bathroom.

While the bed was drenched in blood, the bathroom had little blood.
Lindsey’s body also had bruises all over, including on her arms and legs, and some of them appeared to be defensive wounds.
Hours after Lindsey Barnett’s body was found, police received a call from a woman claiming to be Patrick’s girlfriend and asking for a welfare check.
She told police she hadn’t heard from him since 11 p.m. the previous night, which she said was unusual since the two texted constantly, NBC News reported.
She said Patrick had indicated he and Lindsey were going to get a divorce, that Lindsey had been in a psychiatric unit and that she had attempted suicide just the weekend prior.
The next day, Patrick was charged with first-degree murder.
Lindsey’s mother, Donna Ott, told police her daughter has had depression before but had not exhibited any such symptoms recently and never attempted suicide.

She alleged Patrick had been verbally abusive toward Lindsey in the past.
Barnett is scheduled to appear before a Jefferson County judge on Friday.
