PROSPECT HILL, N.C. (WBTV/Gray News) – A mass shooting left multiple people dead in rural North Carolina on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. at a house along Brooks Road in the Prospect Hill area of Caswell County.
State investigators said in a news release that deputies with the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office found multiple people shot once they arrived at the home. One of those people was taken to the Duke University Hospital in Durham, while multiple others died.
The release did not identify how many people were killed.
Officials say the suspected shooter was among those dead, and the individuals involved in the shooting are family members.

Authorities have not publicly said what led up to the shooting, but state investigators said they were collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses.
Caswell County is on the North Carolina-Virginia border. The area where the shooting happened is about 40 minutes northwest of Durham.
