GILBERT, AZ (AZFamily) — A close friend of 32-year-old Delaney Bristow is remembering her life after Bristow was killed in a stabbing at a Gilbert home over the weekend.

‘There’s truly nobody like her’
Ashley Schmidt, a lifelong friend of Bristow, said the two met in high school and remained close for nearly 20 years. Bristow had recently traveled to Omaha to serve as Schmidt’s maid of honor.
“I mean, I’ve never met anybody like her,” Schmidt said. “She was the life of every room and she was so much fun and she was so loyal and just a really good person and I don’t know. She just left such an impression on people and there’s truly nobody like her.”
Schmidt said the reality of her friend’s death has not fully set in.
“Shocking and devastating and random. It doesn’t feel real. I keep wanting to call her and just talk about my day. It’s still a lot,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt said she wants Bristow to be remembered for how she lived.
“She was so sweet and she was so loved and she loved with her whole heart. If you were her friend, she was going to ride or die for you. She was going to defend you. She was going to laugh with you, cheer you on,” Schmidt said.
Schmidt said her goal going forward is to carry on Bristow’s example.
“She was emphatically kind, so I think leading the type of life that she would have is the best way I can honor her,” Schmidt said.
What police say happened
Gilbert police identified the suspect as 28-year-old Brett Eschliman, who lived at the property near Lindsay and Elliot roads. Officers shot and killed Eschliman at the scene. Police said Eschliman and the victims knew each other and the stabbing was an isolated incident.

Around 11 p.m. Saturday, officers were called to the home for an “unknown trouble” call. A 911 caller reported that a suspect had stabbed a person living in a backyard building on the property, which police said contained multiple buildings and homes.
When officers arrived, they heard a woman screaming inside one of the buildings. They saw Eschliman at the entrance and followed him inside, where they found an injured man and woman. Officers chased Eschliman into a bedroom and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known whether he was holding a weapon at the time he was shot.
Three people were stabbed in total, two women and a man. Thirty-year-old Caleb Worley, a friend of Eschliman who also lived at the property, died at the scene. Bristow later died at a hospital. A second woman was treated at a hospital. Police said there is no threat to the community. Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the stabbing.
