(Gray News) – CBS has announced that Tony Romo has been placed on indefinite leave after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, CBS said Friday Romo is on leave “until further notice.” It is also reported that JJ Watt will replace Romo as the lead color commentator for the network’s NFL coverage.
Romo has been an NFL analyst for CBS since 2017.
According to a citation released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo was stopped on Interstate 43 on July 23 after he was spotted unsafely passing cars. The Associated Press reported he was seen cutting across the gore area, the space that separates interstate traffic from cars entering from an on-ramp.
In body camera footage released this week, Romo tells the deputy he was coming from a golf course and was on his way “to meet grand and grandpa.”
“Because I’m coming from a golf course, you think I’m drunk?” Romo asked the deputy before getting out of the vehicle. Romo also told the deputy he had “zero drinks.”

An “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” was found in the passenger seat of his car, according to authorities.
The deputy told Romo she suspected he was impaired because of his “red, glassy eyes” and “the odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage from your breath.”
Romo performed poorly on the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He was charged with operating while intoxicated and later released.
Romo started his NFL career in 2004. He played for 13 seasons, all for the Dallas Cowboys. He made four Pro Bowl appearances and remains the franchise’s career leader in touchdown passes with 248, according to ESPN.
