CASA GRANDE, AZ (AZFamily) — Banner Casa Grande Medical Center will continue to offer labor and delivery services after the only obstetric provider in the city announced it was ending services there.

Sun Life Health said last month it would stop serving the hospital on Aug. 1, leaving pregnant women with an hour’s drive to the nearest provider.
“To be stuck on an I-10 while trying to get to a hospital isn’t ideal for anyone,” Evelyn Farris, an expectant mother in Casa Grande, told Arizona’s Family last month.
However, on Monday, Banner Health said there will “be no interruption of services for baby deliveries” at the Casa Grande hospital.
“Physicians already familiar with the hospital and the community will continue to serve mothers, babies and families of Casa Grande and the surrounding communities seven days a week, 24 hours a day while a longer-term plan is finalized,” Banner Health said in a statement. “Labor and delivery, NICU and obstetric services remain fully operational and open.”

Sun Life Health’s chief medical officer, Jonathan Willms, attributed the closure of its offices to a significant shortage of OB-GYNs and said the company hopes to reestablish services in Casa Grande within the year.
