Police said they responded to the apartment after receiving a “frantic” 911 call from the boy’s mother, who was there when the stabbing happened, early Thursday morning.

According to Pineville Police Chief Corey Copley, officers immediately rendered first aid to the seriously injured boy once at the scene. They took him directly to the hospital in the back of one of the police vehicles, but he ultimately did not survive.

As police began to investigate, they said the boy’s father, 31-year-old Jehaaz-Akil Khaliq Echoles, became a suspect and was taken into custody at another location.

Copley did not say exactly what kind of weapon Echoles allegedly killed the boy with, but he described it as a “blunt force trauma-type cutting tool.”

Copley said the boy’s mother has been cooperative with investigators. Another child was also at the apartment and uninjured.

Investigators noted that officers were called earlier this year for another situation involving the family.

“It’s very tragic,” Copley said. “You’ve got to put your emotions aside and do the good work that you’re trying to do.”

Search warrants for the apartment and vehicles were obtained by police as they continue their investigation.

Echoles’ charges include first-degree murder. He was booked into the Mecklenburg County jail.
