The Tucson Fire Department said it happened at a two-story apartment complex around 3:22 a.m.

The TFD said that while the fire was under control in around 20 minutes, one person and one dog were found dead. Only three residents were displaced as the complex was under renovation and many of the units were vacant.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews had to climb a 15-foot-high rip rap rock wall and cut through a metal fence to reach the apartment. Several residents were rescued.

“While many people take extra steps to secure their homes, avoid placing objects or furniture behind exit doors,” the TFD said in a release. “In an emergency, blocked doors can delay escape for occupants and slow firefighters’ efforts to reach those inside. Make sure all exits are clear and accessible and test your smoke alarms monthly. Taking a few simple precautions can make a critical difference when every second counts.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
