Phoenix Police said 18-year-old Jeremy Banegas was found and arrested in Tucson with the help of Tucson Police SWAT in connection with the May 20 murder of 43-year-old Eddie Carrillo.

Police said Carrillo was shot by someone in a passing vehicle in a neighborhood near Interstate 17 and Central Avenue. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Investigators said the 911 caller, identified herself as Carrillo’s girlfriend and told detectives she was inside when she heard two or three gunshots. She said she then heard Carrillo say he had been shot before he collapsed, police said.

Another witness who was in the area told detectives they heard the gunshots and a black mustang leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Police said they used several investigative methods to identify and find the suspect vehicle, which was later determined to belong to Banegas’ cousin. Interviews later pointed to Banegas as the suspect.

After he was arrested, Banegas allegedly told detectives that he drove to the central Phoenix home before the murder to look for another person.

Banegas reportedly told police Carrillo was in the front yard and walked up to his vehicle. That’s when he said a struggle began, and he shot Carrillo and fled from the scene.

Banegas was charged with first-degree murder and discharging a firearm in city limits.
