PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Waymo released new safety numbers for its self-driving cars, saying its vehicles have driven more than 80 million miles in Phoenix.

The company said its vehicles are involved in 90% fewer crashes resulting in serious or worse injuries than human drivers in the same areas over the same periods.
Waymo said its vehicles are involved in 77% fewer crashes where the airbag deploys.
The company also said its vehicles are involved in 72% fewer crashes resulting in injuries.

“Waymo has reached the point where it is driving enough miles to make direct comparisons to human drivers on crash rates,” Carol Flannagan, Research Professor at UMTRI, said.
Waymo now drives more than 4 million miles every week, the company said.
