Man accused of lighting ex-girlfriend’s home, car on fire in Surprise

SURPRISE, AZ (AZFamily) — A man was arrested early Thursday after Surprise Police say he set fire to his ex-girlfriend’s car and a home.

Just before 3 a.m., first responders were called to a report of a structure fire near Grand Avenue and Dysart Road. Police say the caller told dispatchers that her ex-boyfriend, identified as 56-year-old Carman Lee Caldwell was on the property and setting the home and vehicles on fire.

Surprise Police arrived on the scene and arrested Caldwell. Everyone inside the home was safely evacuated.

Firefighters put out the fire and contained it before it spread beyond the structure, according to the Surprise Police Department.

Detectives with the Surprise Police Department are investigating, alongside Surprise Fire-Medical Department arson investigators and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Caldwell was booked on the following charges:

  • 1 count attempted murder 1st degree, Class 2 Felony
  • 1 count arson of an occupied structure, Class 2 Felony
  • 2 counts arson of a structure-vehicle, Class 4 Felony
  • 1 count criminal damage-DV, Class 4 Felony
  • 1 count burglary 1st degree, Class 3 Felony
  • 2 counts endangerment-DV, Class 6 Felony
  • 9 counts misconduct involving weapons, Class 4 Felony
  • 1 count interference with judicial proceedings, Class 1 Misdemeanor
