Around noon Tuesday, a Phoenix Fire Department engine crew noticed large plumes of smoke coming from the area of 35th Avenue and Indian School Road, according to Phoenix Fire Department Cpt. DJ Lee.

Firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from a scrapyard next to a commercial building.

The response escalated to a second-alarm, with additional crews and resources requested to battle the fire.

Crews quickly mobilized, raising several fire lines to pour water onto the structure from above, and prevented the fire from spreading despite heavy winds.

“This was a heavily wind-driven fire. It was pushing hard to the east, the crews did a great job getting a line to that building to stop it from extending to it, so they were able to contain the fire to the scrapyard,” Cpt. Lee said.

There were no reported injuries.

Firefighters put out hot spots throughout the day and fully extinguished the fire shortly after 8:30 p.m.
