Suspected drunk driver detained after plunging into west Phoenix canal

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A driver suspected of impairment was taken into custody overnight after driving into a west Phoenix canal.

Police officers were called around 1:30 a.m. Thursday for a reported car in the Grand Canal near 27th Avenue and Osborn Road.

When officers arrived, the driver was found outside of the car and showed signs of impairment, Phoenix PD said.

A witness reported to police that the driver was stopped in traffic and passed out behind the wheel just before crashing into the canal.

The Chevrolet Malibu was sitting in the canal as Arizona’s Family arrived at the scene.

Phoenix Police’s Dive Team worked to remove the car from the canal. Police detained the driver, who was then processed for driving under the influence.
