Shortly before 6 a.m., officers were called to the area of Cave Creek and Greenway roads for reports of a crash involving a bicyclist. When police arrived, they found the bicyclist in critical condition due to his severe injuries.

The man was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died. He has not yet been publicly identified.

Police say the driver involved in the crash fled the scene before authorities arrived but was later found at a home and taken into custody.

Sgt. Lorraine Fernandez said the vehicle had a chance to stop and help the bicyclist, but did not do so. The vehicle later stopped to let out a passenger before the driver continued on the road.

“I cannot stress this enough for our community,” Sgt. Fernandez said. “I can’t imagine being in this situation where you’ve struck another person. I can’t imagine how terrifying that feeling of ‘you’re in trouble.’ Please stop. We want to hear your side of the story. We want to hear what happened. Just because you were in the vehicle doesn’t necessarily mean you were at fault. But we don’t have that information if you don’t stop.”

Sgt. Fernandez said bystanders stopped to provide information to officers at the scene.

The intersection was closed throughout the morning but reopened Tuesday afternoon.
