Around 6 a.m., police responded to reports of a burglary near Arizona Avenue and Elliot Road. According to court paperwork, an elderly man reported that someone had broken into his home and shot one of his daughters. The victim reported that at least two unknown men forced their way inside through his bedroom door and struck him in the head with a gun, according to authorities.

Police say that during the assault, the suspects demanded that the victim give up his vehicle keys and later stole his Mercedes sedan.

The injured daughter, whom police say had special needs due to a traumatic brain injury, was taken to the hospital with two gunshot wounds to her arm. Her father was also hospitalized, and both are expected to survive.

Surveillance video captured three suspects walking through an alley before breaking into the elderly man’s home. Police also recovered video from inside the home, which showed three suspects inside, and one of them shooting the man’s daughter. All three reportedly ran toward the back window, and one shot at the window while attempting to escape.

During a search of the home, police found two empty rifle casings, a broken window and blood on the shattered glass. Two additional empty casings were found near the broken back window.

Suspects robbed Uber driver on same day

Court documents state that just 20 minutes before the home break-in, an Uber driver reported that five men with tattoos tried to get into his sedan. The driver told the group that he couldn’t fit all of them inside his vehicle, which led to an argument. Police say the driver told them to get out of his car, but was struck in the head with a firearm by one of the men.

Investigators said the suspect held the driver at gunpoint while another man stole some of his personal items, including a watch and cell phone. The group then fled the scene as the driver flagged down a good Samaritan to call the police.

The driver was hospitalized with injuries to his head. Investigators later found the Uber driver’s stolen cell phone in an alleyway.

Fleeing to Mexico

Court documents state that police used the Uber records to track down the account holder. Police showed up at the account holder’s Chandler home, who identified Jesus Nunez as one of the suspects.

Investigators continued searching through the Uber records, which showed a requested drop-off at a Phoenix home. Authorities searched the area and found the elderly victim’s stolen Mercedes a block away, which had damage and its license plate removed.

Police used cell phone records to locate Nunez, which showed he was traveling south to the Arizona-Mexico border. Authorities tracked the vehicle to the Nogales area and found Nunez, an underage suspect and three adults in the vehicle on Sunday evening.

The three adults in the vehicle were arrested for hindering the investigation, and the underage suspect was also taken into custody in connection with the Chandler break-in.

Nunez was booked on charges of armed robbery, theft of means of transportation, burglary, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery. He is being held on a $250,000 bond.

Chandler police are continuing to search for the other suspects involved.
