PHOENIX (AZFamily) – Four House Republicans joined Democrats to limit President Trump’s war powers in Iran, but Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs was not among them.

The five-term congressman, who is also running for Arizona governor, voted against the resolution.

Following the vote, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson warned it will weaken the administration.

“I think it is a very dangerous prospect to take away from the administration and the commander in chief right now the ability to negotiate. That’s what this does. It weakens us, our position and our leverage in negotiation,” Johnson said.

Biggs calls vote a ‘political trap’

Biggs said he thought it was a political trap.

“I think that was a Democrat gotcha vote where they wanted to embarrass the president. I’m not into embarrassing the president,” Biggs said.

All six Republicans in the Arizona congressional delegation voted against the resolution. That includes Rep. David Schweikert, who is also running for governor.

The measure still needs to pass the Senate. If approved, it would force Trump to withdraw military forces from the ongoing war or seek congressional approval.

Biggs said he doesn’t think it will come to that.

“I believe that there’s an incredibly high likelihood that this thing get resolved in the next few weeks,” Biggs said.

If the Senate passes an identical version it would not need the president’s signature. If changes are made, then it would need the president’s signature to take effect.
